It is seriously my favorite time of the day. It took me a few years to find my rhythm with them and to find out what style worked for my teaching personality. There are two things that I did this past year that changed the reading group game for me. The first was the organization of my materials and the second was my transitions. The transitions will be discussed in a later post.<br />
<br />
As a side note- in my school, we used the Jan Richardson Guided Reading System lesson plans and exercises. We used leveled reading books and tested students 4 times a year to see if they met benchmark. This meant that my reading group time had to be very organized and routine.<br />
<br />
So let's talk about the bins I used.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpVG3A8iuUYt1mGpMtnN5-PwmRp52a4sT9Y53CJD2mBCul84Ym4ZoKE8I1OTkpCVKTc5mfAdyo-0ybPvwC4LXOV_4eEc9zCVrcp0CResJSUNSCSbI7L29C49AS-mXrFye0sBY4zpBzuctl/s1600/GuidedReadingPin.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1072" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpVG3A8iuUYt1mGpMtnN5-PwmRp52a4sT9Y53CJD2mBCul84Ym4ZoKE8I1OTkpCVKTc5mfAdyo-0ybPvwC4LXOV_4eEc9zCVrcp0CResJSUNSCSbI7L29C49AS-mXrFye0sBY4zpBzuctl/s400/GuidedReadingPin.png" width="357" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Student Bins </h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At each student's spot was a bin filled with all the materials they needed. This was a total time saver and game changer! Inside the bins were.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 small dry erase board </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 dry erase marker & eraser </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 pencil (marked with tape so that it never walked away from the table) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 eraser </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 set of letter cards for making words </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Express-Martian-Costume-Fingers/dp/B003FQ1VMM/ref=cts_ap_1_vtp">Halloween finger</a> for pointing, finding sight words, and tracking for those low babies. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Teacher Bins </h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each group was randomly assigned a color. Each group had a matching color bin. Each rotation, I just pulled the bin which made for a fast transition. My materials could be put away, pulled out, and I could meet the students on the carpet in less than 2 minutes. I know because I timed the transitions and I almost always beat them ha! Inside these bins were.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* leveled set of books </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* lesson plans </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* 1 notebook for each student </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* any supplemental materials which changed depending on the book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Guided Reading Routine & Classroom Management </h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is why I loved the student bins so much. When it was the kids turn to come to group, they knew to sit down and get their white board and dry erase markers out of the their bins. They practiced writing sight words when I wasn't there yet or I decided what words they would work on. This became a very fast and VERY efficient 2-3 minutes. Then they would out their supplies away and they would be ready to read. At the end reading group 3 days a week, students would work on writing or they would build words using <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Making-Words-A-Guided-Reading-Activity-4024125">these letters</a>. So all the supplies they would need were at their finger tips which made for fast transition time between activities so I could squeeze every ounce of learning in to the time I wanted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How do you organize your reading groups? Any tips or tricks that have been game changers for you? </div>

I used the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bright-Classroom-Schedule-Cards-3957514" target="_blank">schedule cards</a> that are pictured below last year for my first grade classroom. Well established classroom routines and schedules are so important because they influence a child's emotional and cognitive development in the classroom. Students love predictability. It helps them feel secure and it helps them feel successful. And most importantly ((to me anyways!)) is that it helps cut down on time for transitions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These cards were wonderful because they had pictures and the subject written so all of my readers and emerging readers could follow the schedule. Off to the side I had the time in analog and digital versions. We didn't teach time until the second half of the year but everyone could read the digital time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3K_HZ8djg9Xue2xynR1G-2NUMXGYG8wtEJm08PtMrL5TCdHEcObn__zZlLhLLZB-el-ypKaRkyjoCqZzA7j82ZkP1t3AhUlcDxos88lqctXMS-iQo5Z41lTbF6TnFKTBvvbeMt_3E4AWb/s1600/BrightScheduleCardsLongPin.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="853" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3K_HZ8djg9Xue2xynR1G-2NUMXGYG8wtEJm08PtMrL5TCdHEcObn__zZlLhLLZB-el-ypKaRkyjoCqZzA7j82ZkP1t3AhUlcDxos88lqctXMS-iQo5Z41lTbF6TnFKTBvvbeMt_3E4AWb/s640/BrightScheduleCardsLongPin.png" width="337" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How I use Classroom Schedule Cards</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the beginning of the year when we are learning all our new classroom routines, I point to each subject change or activity change in the day. As we practice our transitions, we talk about what we will be doing next and what we just did. Students get up and point to the different subjects to show off where we are in the day too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During morning meeting, I will always point out changes that are going to happen during the day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I LOVE this schedule for when unexpected changes happen such as a last minute guest or assembly or fire drill. Those things really throw off some students. I get a lot of questions about what time it is and what are we doing. Instead of just explaining what time it is, I walk the student to the schedule and show them where we WOULD be in our day so they know what they missed or what was coming next. This is also great for students who arrive late or leave early. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eventually with schedule cards and established routines, students can get their materials ready for the next subject and activity without even being asked. I always made a huge deal over the students who would transition to the next subject without being asked. They make me so proud! </div>

My first grade class created these adorable Martin Luther King Jr. craftivities today. We took two days to learn about Dr. King and tied what we learned about him into a writing standard- using descriptive words in writing. Here is what we did below. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjxuDuBx3xBemq5bckEx34w0SF9eBQTJyopBFHleYMy26DelB0Z3hMPvQDzE1tSpUw5F3odDX5diLS5eZH5Rm1mw2y-1yi8GOjFBcWa0va1RB25G4dK-B20B7May9CtozMIUxz_KS6b7xm/s1600/IMG_4241.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjxuDuBx3xBemq5bckEx34w0SF9eBQTJyopBFHleYMy26DelB0Z3hMPvQDzE1tSpUw5F3odDX5diLS5eZH5Rm1mw2y-1yi8GOjFBcWa0va1RB25G4dK-B20B7May9CtozMIUxz_KS6b7xm/s320/IMG_4241.JPG" width="281" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>Day 1</b></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. We learned what adjectives are using an anchor chart. We also wrote 3 sentences, expanding each of them to add adjectives. We started with the base sentence "I see the cat." This turned into "I see the fluffy cat." Then we added even more description to make it, "I see the orange, fluffy cat." If time allows, this would make for fun partner practice. We didn't do this on that day, but we continue to do this with partners through out the school year. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. Next, we made a KNOW/LEARNED chart about Martin Luther King Jr. Turns out, we didn't know a whole lot yet. That is ok! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. We read a small reader about MLK which can be found <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Martins-Big-Words-A-complete-MLK-mini-unit-2970530" target="_blank">here</a>. We had a very rich discussion about segregation and Martin's Life. My class was very into it. To put it into perspective, I said, "What if I told you all the girls could play on the playground and all the boys couldn't just because they are boys." That made the idea of segregation being unfair very realistic for them. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. As we read, I underlined adjectives and defined words for them. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Day 2</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. We reviewed what we knew and had learned about Martin Luther King Jr. by completing the learned side of the anchor chart. I really emphasized at this age the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to use love and his words for good and to make change happen. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. We read <u>Martin's Big Words </u>and discussed</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. We added more to our anchor chart. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. We made the Martin craftivity and added descriptive words on his body. They are not very visible in the picture unfortunately. This was done together. They list they came up with was</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>smart </li>
<li>hard worker</li>
<li>followed his dreams </li>
<li>brown </li>
<li>minister </li>
<li>leader </li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The craft was so simple and fun! It really only took about 30 minutes to create and it looks wonderful in the hallway. The only supplies they need are black construction paper, crayons, scissors, and glue. You can just print <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Martins-Big-Words-A-complete-MLK-mini-unit-2970530" target="_blank">this product</a> from TPT to get MLK's face and body. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you don't have the book <u>Martin's Big Words</u>, I also really enjoyed the book <u>My Brother Martin</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

They reinforce the content and they help keep even the busiest of busy bees engaged in the lesson. When I was researching what I needed in order to teach virtually, I thought I would have to purchase a lot of props. You definitely do not! In fact, the more I work, the more I realize that the really big props can actually be challenging to work with. You need to be able to reach everything during your lessons without getting up. When you have lessons back to back, you don't have a lot of time to set up and rearrange the props. So, I use a lot of printed out pictures as my props. To organize them, I used an old coupon file folder. This makes it very easy to grab an image mid lesson.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_qS-pfALmOM8WOz5atO5vTzlCDGA-W9xpY3spWjBZ1SPmVpf3vMieJ-CM7p6-utEORaaVHu-vUPcWXWul8f9vtnuJyIl6ozAiRppd5GBh00Cm5tmhrlMmOuQwOgPCQ221pEr8cwFq0ftU/s1600/IMG_9844+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_qS-pfALmOM8WOz5atO5vTzlCDGA-W9xpY3spWjBZ1SPmVpf3vMieJ-CM7p6-utEORaaVHu-vUPcWXWul8f9vtnuJyIl6ozAiRppd5GBh00Cm5tmhrlMmOuQwOgPCQ221pEr8cwFq0ftU/s320/IMG_9844+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This file folder is what I use the most (besides my white board!) It contains all my letter flash cards, color flash cards, shapes flashcards, VIPKID characters, cards with the weather on it, cards with places on them, and a set of images that help us discuss family members.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzBeXZcOErBGGmHKPUYSf7dfxLjFKYVaPpPqFfWyzQnmF__WuxObgIPb-4TcOUcsZU4hm-vpJ3VnYiC_wGwX3smuzYoOa825gCcIZBbGIyG7rniMlmHSTU2ErSbJlwQO7N-bsIE_M4v7wZ/s1600/IMG_9851+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzBeXZcOErBGGmHKPUYSf7dfxLjFKYVaPpPqFfWyzQnmF__WuxObgIPb-4TcOUcsZU4hm-vpJ3VnYiC_wGwX3smuzYoOa825gCcIZBbGIyG7rniMlmHSTU2ErSbJlwQO7N-bsIE_M4v7wZ/s320/IMG_9851+%25281%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In addition to my file folder of print outs, I have a puppet. Young students are often very good at repeating what you say but when you want them to start asking and answering questions, it can be hard for them to do so. The puppet is very helpful for modeling conversation. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Besides the file folder, puppet, and white board, I don't have many other props. I use a lot of TPR (total physical response) so I am very animated during the lessons. I review all the lessons the night before and if I happen to have something around the house that goes with the lesson, I will use that too. So while you definitely need props to help with lessons, you don't need to buy a bunch of themed props. In fact, you see those beautiful magnetic letters? Yeah...they never get used. It takes too much time to find the right ones. I just write on my white board. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here below you will see me taking a shameless selfie during a lesson while I explained a final project to take a picture showing them following classroom rules. It was 5:00 am!</div>

Here is what you will need....<br />

I personally chose the map because I saw lots of other teachers using it. It turns out, the map is so useful! I refer to it during almost every lesson. It also is helpful for me to engage in natural conversation with my student beyond what is presented in the lesson. I have seen other teachers use number or letter charts. I have also seen the most adorable "classroom starter kits" at teacher stores. I bet those would look amazing as a background. When I was finishing my second Mock class during the interviewing process, I had none of this set up. I had a plain wall behind me. I wasn't going to commit to setting up the class if I didn't get hired.... The mentor teacher did say that the background being plain was OK, but VIPKID prefers something educational.<br />
<br />
If you are a traveling teacher or you do not have a dedicated work space, here are my suggestions.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU8r3WqSXpqU6T2TCSlrv1L8vI4uZr-L12JHoqUD1Py6qPVXWdhKpLFVdeR0O5TB13ogJuqA4sVUnKbpRrSUsTTY1r7SwQkKMSNfxZ7kSHiaHz80QhyuRPaH8kpaMKS0VHHj5aVPqo8yaD/s1600/VIPKIDClassroom.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="194" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU8r3WqSXpqU6T2TCSlrv1L8vI4uZr-L12JHoqUD1Py6qPVXWdhKpLFVdeR0O5TB13ogJuqA4sVUnKbpRrSUsTTY1r7SwQkKMSNfxZ7kSHiaHz80QhyuRPaH8kpaMKS0VHHj5aVPqo8yaD/s320/VIPKIDClassroom.png" width="320" /></a>1. Use a piece of fabric or shower curtain. Both are portable and easy to hang.<br />
2. Grab a tri fold poster board and decorate it. It will stand up easily and even better, it will fold away easily.<br />
3. Use ManyCam. This is not a program I personally use, but many VIPKID teachers use it. ManyCam is a software program that allows you to add a background and graphics onto live videos. If you have a plain wall, you can jazz up the space virtually. </div>
</div>
<h3>
2. Good lighting. </h3>
<div>
See that big light? It is wonderful! I found it at Lowe's. I also bought LED daylight light bulbs. It makes for a clear, white light. Good lighting is so important! The students have to be able to see you, see what you do, see your lips move, and see your props that support the lesson. If you invest in anything, invest in good lighting<br />
<br />
<h3>
3. A good work space. </h3>
</div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWuYqz5ZqtjrgBXmbn0O8Xl2fSeE-LPuT5_eA0F9JrlFkLfYeSELfsLqOZJbyHqbjmdV62vMy1Bz2gmc-LvU2nfHrP98opptHZkoPq1Kmh3xB8sxPDQjcQgvJ2bk8acCxpFopBk40AhaAy/s1600/IMG_9856+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWuYqz5ZqtjrgBXmbn0O8Xl2fSeE-LPuT5_eA0F9JrlFkLfYeSELfsLqOZJbyHqbjmdV62vMy1Bz2gmc-LvU2nfHrP98opptHZkoPq1Kmh3xB8sxPDQjcQgvJ2bk8acCxpFopBk40AhaAy/s320/IMG_9856+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a>You need a quiet and clutter free space to call your classroom. We are short on space so I am stuck in our living room. In this photo, you can see I have things on the sides of my classroom. When I am teaching, you cannot see them. Off to the side, I have plastic drawers to store my item. They are within my reach so I can get to them if needed in a lesson.<br />
It is not hard to teach from a space that is not dedicated to teaching. Keep in mind too, some teachers are traveling the world! They change backgrounds and places all the time. How you teach is way more important. </div>

You teach children one on one in their virtual classroom. The company has the entire curriculum set up so as the teacher, you just have to make your own schedule and then show up to teach!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRexZ3qx8MruNKkF6udFzjZEZpShhnNv3tFJ3RpyxxZzZUS1pRNXuHXgTBrXPWoJ3hRwQpNtdey-GZ_u34zuJ582EwQPlDk99_7TFJNNi9amCvv2jUL59Y__9qYvM_vvGhm8l0SJQebLF/s1600/Slide1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRexZ3qx8MruNKkF6udFzjZEZpShhnNv3tFJ3RpyxxZzZUS1pRNXuHXgTBrXPWoJ3hRwQpNtdey-GZ_u34zuJ582EwQPlDk99_7TFJNNi9amCvv2jUL59Y__9qYvM_vvGhm8l0SJQebLF/s640/Slide1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<h2>
<u>So how does it work? </u></h2>
1. <u>Age</u>- Children between the ages of 5-12 sign up.<br />
2. <u>Levels</u>- Children can take a computer test to see what level fits them best. Not all kids take the test however. So you might encounter some trial classes where you are trying to find the best level fit for the child.<br />
3. <u>Schedule</u>- YOU SET YOUR OWN SCHEDULE. I repeat... YOU MAKE YOUR OWN schedule!! Now, Beijing is about 12 hours ahead of the United States depending on your time zone. I am in the mountain time zone so currently Beijing is 14 hours ahead of us. <a href="https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=4466153" target="_blank">VIPKIDS</a> has peak hours in the evenings from 6-10 pm during the week. This means that for us, peak hours are first thing in the morning from about 4-9 am. You can also work many more hours on weekend evenings. I personally work from 5-7am during the week.<br />
Classes are 25 minutes long, in 30 minutes blocks. This allows you to change classrooms and leave feedback and take a breather in between classes.<br />
4. <u>Planning</u>- No planning! They have the curriculum already set up for you. The night before I log onto their virtual classroom and review the slides. I pull props I might need.<br />
5. <u>Pay</u>-You get a base pay for every 30 minutes. On top of that there are bonuses such as $1 for being there on time and $1 for leaving feedback. There are also monthly incentives that change.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<br />
<h2>
<u>What is the hiring process like?</u> </h2>
To apply, you need a bachelors degree. Experience with children isn't a requirement, but it is defiantly a plus. The hiring process is quick and a little intense. There is an interview and 2 mock classes you teach. The interview takes 30 minutes and each mock class is 1 hour long, but you are only teaching for 25 minutes. You spend the other part of the time discussing what you did well and what you need to improve on.<br />
<br />
I completed everything within 2 weeks. I only took that long because I scheduled everything during my son's naps. To prepare, I reviewed the slides and practiced. I also watched YouTube videos to help me out.<br />
<h2>
<u>Do I need to buy things for the job?</u></h2>
There isn't much that you need to buy for this job. Props are important for young learners but if you are already a mom or a teacher (or BOTH) you probably have everything you need. I usually walk over to my sons toy bin and pull a few items.<br />
<br />
Here is what I did buy.<br />
1. A small personal white board to hold up to the computer. It's the most important prop I have and probably the only one that I say is a MUST.<br />
2. A poster for my background. I found a map at the dollar store! I love it and use it all the time in my introductions with new students.<br />
3. A few sets of flashcards from the dollar store<br />
4. Puppets to model conversation....but truthfully my son loves playing with them at the library so it was really for both of us!<br />
<br />
Here are a few articles I found about the company.<br />

<br />
Time is a pretty exciting math unit because the kids can immediately apply it to their own life and use it. So, I wanted to make it even more fun.<br />
<br />
For this math game, I found that 3 students at a time worked best. 4 was a crowd. I couldn't let just 2 students play at a time because they were so excited about it!<br />
<br />
To play, <u>student 1 is the time keeper</u>. The time keeper gets to set the time for the other players. I emphasized that the time keeper must know what they are are setting so they can check the other students. When the time keeper sets the hour and minute hand on the clock, they say "tick tock what time is on the clock?" This lets everyone know they are ready.<br />
<br />
<u>Students 2 and 3 are the time seekers</u>. They write down the time on their white boards. The time keeper must check that the time seekers got the time correct. This way, everyone is practicing their time! <br />
<br />
I also wrote the minutes on the table with dry erase markers for the first 2 weeks. They wipe right off with a lysol wipe.<br />
<br />
In addition to our super awesome life sized clock we learned a time cheer! Students should just repeat after you. I got my inspiration from hearing army cadences. Lyrics are provided below!<br />
<br />
Teacher: This is how you tell the time<br />
Students: This is how you tell the time<br />

Stores are filling up with Halloween candy and costumes. Once Halloween hits, all the holidays just come so quickly. So, this year I was inspired by a resource I saw a teacher had in her room. She had a holiday word bin that had special holiday words listed. During holiday themed unites, especially writing and centers, I get a lot of "But how so you spell...." I thought this was a genius resource to help with that problem, but I wanted to adjust it just a little. So I created this holiday word dictionary. Each of the holiday words has a matching picture to go with it. So hopefully the kids will get help spelling the words they need, or completing the FUN holiday worksheets, and I hope the visuals of the pictures will help spark their creativity when it comes to their writing during the holidays. I am a huge fan or writing activities during the holiday season to match any craft we do.<br />

<h3>
<b><u>What's Inside? </u></b></h3>
Student practice identifying literary elements from the story they just read. This isn't going to teach them the skills. It's a fun and interactive way to practice them and apply them to the classroom.<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b><u>My favorite ways to use this flipbook:</u></b> </h3>
1. End of the unit review<br />
2. Put in in their reading interactive notebook<br />
3. Perfect for sub plans!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Because we move around a lot for my husbands work, I have really put in some time to my teaching portfolio. A portfolio is a very personal thing. It reflects you as a teacher and as a professional. That being said, no two portfolios will look the same. My portfolio might not be just right for you. But, I wanted to share some of my ideas.<br />
<h2>
<br />Why I Created A Portfolio- Interview Story Time </h2>
I had an interview about a year ago when we first moved to our current location. It did not go well. My answers HORRIBLE. I knew after answering the first question, it was a bad interview. Here is what happened. There was a job posting for a reading teacher. Like most jobs, it was a generic posting so I didn't know exactly what the reading teacher would be doing. Is it in the room? Pull out groups? What grades? What curriculum? The first question I was asked (and of course it was a panel of teachers and administrators) was, "What is your goal for this program?" Um what? I don't know what the program is! So I asked if he would please explain to me what the program was. He couldn't. All I could gather was the it was a grant based position and that I would probably pull students out and sit in the hallway with them. I truly couldn't answer his question. I didn't know what curriculum, if any, they were using. He couldn't tell me the grades he wanted me to work with. Nothing. Needless to say my answer was truly embarrassing. This left me feeling so badly about myself and my interviewing skills that I knew I had to do something about it so that didn't happen again.<br />
<br />
I should also mention that my greatest fear is public speaking. Not speaking to kids, but to adults. That makes interviewing a very hard task for me. This makes interviewing for another job after a bad interview completely overwhelming. I needed something to help me out during this next interview. Enter the portfolio.<br />
<br />
<h2>
The Portfolio </h2>
I know that a portfolio looks good to interviewers, but my main reason for creating it was because I wanted a prop or something I could rely on if I got stuck or had a moment of panic. When I sat down to create the portfolio I asked myself the following questions.<br />
<br />
1. What defines me as a teacher?<br />
2. What kinds of questions am I most likely to be asked?<br />
3. Can I provide examples from my past experience to support my answers?<br />
4. What kind of data can I provide the interviewers?<br />
5. What work am I most proud of?<br />
<br />
So in answering these questions, I decided to include the following sections to the portfolio<br />
<br />
1. Original Lessons<br />
2. Student Achievement Data<br />
3. Observations- both official and not<br />
4. Classroom Management Philosophy<br />
5. Sample Lesson Plans<br />
6. Credentials<br />
<br />
I also stuck a few random odds and ends in the back pocket of the folder such as examples of my classroom modifications.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7oCdxbKqBsqL4GPcZCISFONjoHRyKYjwDA9xN_FVCZzMOrJQVbNn7U-0i6DyShHyYjqMPgiU6Gs85WmIrfBXWWZoQvEtIMTdeA0vZ3lQxVz-K3VIRip4Tj5Xfsqav5puI57zHa6rtorEV/s1600/TeachingPortfolio2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7oCdxbKqBsqL4GPcZCISFONjoHRyKYjwDA9xN_FVCZzMOrJQVbNn7U-0i6DyShHyYjqMPgiU6Gs85WmIrfBXWWZoQvEtIMTdeA0vZ3lQxVz-K3VIRip4Tj5Xfsqav5puI57zHa6rtorEV/s400/TeachingPortfolio2.jpg" width="388" /></a></div>
<br />
<h2>
Did It Work? </h2>
YES! I spent a fair amount of time creating the portfolio so when it came time to interview, I already had specific examples and physical examples to back up my answers. It made me so much less nervous and I think the panel liked the portfolio. I walked out of the interview and called my husband and told him that I actually thought it went well! And you know what, it did, because the next day, I got the job!<br />

<br />
Do you want to have a little fun and connect to your students in a relatable way? I know I do! By the time my students reached 5th grade, they have seen all the classroom rules before. My first 2 years in 5th grade, I did the same thing. We came up with the classroom rules as a class and signed an agreement to follow them. I often would refer to the contract that they signed if there were issues. I would also go over the classroom rules again and have them resign an agreement if issues continued. For my class, it just wasn't very effective. So, I wanted to get a little creative with the usual classroom rules so that they really stuck with them when I had to refer to them again. Below, you will find my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Classroom-Rules-Hashtag-Posters-2605131" target="_blank">new and improved set of classroom rules</a>..... with hashtags!<br />
<br />
If you are interested in these posters, there are now 9 different styles to choose from. There are 1/2 sheets in case you are short on space. There are colored options- all of which are pictured below. There are also 2 black and white options. This would be great if you have a classroom theme that doesn't match my designs. You could print them and laminate them to colored or patterned paper that does match your room.<br />
<br />
There are also some posters for our friends across the pond. They say, "Rubbish goes in the bin" and "No mobile phone use."<br />
<br />
Finally, if you are a school that uses CHAMPS or you don't want the posters to say classroom rules, I have created options that says classroom guidelines, school guidelines, and CHAMPS guidelines and they all use the hashtag #success.<br />
<br />
<br />
I really have had so much fun creating these! Let me know how much you love them by commenting below!<br />

Since it is June and school has been out for a few weeks, naturally I am already looking ahead to next year. I really like leaving something for the kids on their first day on school. This year, I am keeping it simple with these notes and candy! I don't have a color printer at school (boo) so I made them in black and white. I still really like how they came out. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
This year is my husbands FIRST FATHER'S DAY! His only request was to have a huge, fancy brunch that has prime rib. But, I wanted to create a little present to go with it. So when he is in a brunch food coma this Sunday, he will have a huge bucket of goodies to really send himself over the edge! And to really sweeten it up (haha see what I did there??) I wrote this little poem. I am really happy with how it turned out! I also took and printed a picture of our son and put that in the basket! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Create this easy and inexpensive, yet adorable, DIY Father's Day basket. To make this basket, you will need the following...</div>

Who doesn't love a good flipbook? What has stopped me from using them as much as I would like is that they can be a pain to assemble. So I spent a lot of time creating, measuring, printing, and reprinting the perfect flipbook! All you have to do is print it double-sided, or copy it double-sided, and fold. No joke. That's all there is to do!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/EF06kFOZshE/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EF06kFOZshE?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
Here I have a quick video showing you how to fold all of my flipbooks. This tutorial is shown with my beginning of the year flipbook. I like to use this when I meet the parents and honestly, I review it with the kids the first day of school.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14003279793081622793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064305345283129151.post-50925584708810653482016-03-23T09:26:00.000-07:002016-03-23T09:26:29.331-07:00Finding Evidence In The Text <div style="text-align: left;">
Finding evidence in the text is such an important skill. I mean let's face it. If students always went back into the text and found the answer, they would be getting near perfect scores! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I think it just takes a lot of practice. Like. A lot. And some of them don't love it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I get it. My students read a text and answer the questions. They THINK they know all the answers so asking them to go back and do another step, ugh. I can the grumbles and groans from here. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really like the students to stay sharp on this skill so I have been using task cards. They are a quick and efficient way for students to practice showing where they found their answer. These can be completed in just 10 minutes. How many times have you needed or wanted to fill up just ten minutes of time? Yes, we have ALL been there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgej7uPerlLtSidnHRn1A6fmqce67S8WI-AUoJTJ49o81Q2ZKSYDRrw29W2HQ3JU99g1ehrkiQmopxx0sTkoIP6q8rXo7kFMY0NHzp8kdaJtxnhI99VnS_6NlFpBzfFT6rqs2CPGXpCr0VK/s1600/IMG_7827.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgej7uPerlLtSidnHRn1A6fmqce67S8WI-AUoJTJ49o81Q2ZKSYDRrw29W2HQ3JU99g1ehrkiQmopxx0sTkoIP6q8rXo7kFMY0NHzp8kdaJtxnhI99VnS_6NlFpBzfFT6rqs2CPGXpCr0VK/s320/IMG_7827.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These task cards all have short reading passages. They vary from non-fiction to fiction, single paragraphs, to multi-paragraphs. They also all have skill based questions, such as main idea, inference, author's purpose, ect. Students read the passage and answer the questions. To answer the questions, they need to go back and find their answers using highlighters or markers in the text. I have them use a different color for each question so that. In addition to finding the answer, I have them write out a COMPLETE response. This includes the question restated. Another bonus skill! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZDtAqelE9Hfa57j20YcQVda2KS8E-oNTUTGUKzMjwfbo-8VWJZsquA4SjmB5tUcKcx7vvrxFFpb0bvnz54A6xjz46JZl6K_Kon9eXQ6LCUIXo2Zf-yLMwqW_4G37EjFnh6cz9Ovy7okU3/s1600/IMG_7762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZDtAqelE9Hfa57j20YcQVda2KS8E-oNTUTGUKzMjwfbo-8VWJZsquA4SjmB5tUcKcx7vvrxFFpb0bvnz54A6xjz46JZl6K_Kon9eXQ6LCUIXo2Zf-yLMwqW_4G37EjFnh6cz9Ovy7okU3/s400/IMG_7762.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really like to keep a good stack of these on hand to pull out and use weekly. They are also fantastic for small group and RTI work. I pull students and review the cards if they weren't getting the right answers. Each year I also seem to have a few who struggle with restating the question when writing a complete answer so I use these questions to fine tune that skill as well. </div>

"That's why ____ is important."<br />
"That's all I have to say."<br />
<br />
OH conclusions! They can be just a little frustrating when you keep getting the same responses like above.<br />
<br />
I get it. We spend so much time teaching them how to write a strong body of the essay that sometimes the conclusion doesn't get a lot of attention.<br />
<br />
So in my room, we use a simple 3 step formula for writing a strong conclusion.<br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>1. Start with a transition </i><br />
<i>2. Ask & answer "So what" and "Why would?" </i><br />
<i> - So what did I write about?</i><br />
<i> - Why would anybody care? </i><br />
<i>3. Make a memorable statement</i><br />
<br />
<br />
After we practice those three steps, I love using this cute guy for their writers notebook! We wrap up and review the characteristics of a conclusion by brainstorming what a conclusion looks like, sounds like, and feels like.<br />
<br />

I bet your students will just love this checklist! Mine remembered all the steps of revising and editing so quickly using this mnemonic device. By the end of the year it is our little joke to just say "INSTAGRAM IT!"<br />
<br />
Enjoy!<br />

Making better word choices in writing makes for better writing. It's really easy to get in the habit of using the same words over and over again, even as adults! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Create a list of old words with new choices and put those boring words into retirement! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Materials</u>: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Personal Reading Book </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paper & Pencil </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thesaurus/Dictionary </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Total Time:</u> 25-40 minutes </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Directions</u>: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Have students scan a few pages of their personal reading book and have them pick out descriptive words. After 5 minutes, several students should share their findings with the class. Pretty quickly, you will find that the students have words that repeat such as happy, good, tired, cold, angry, pretty, small, ect.... These become the tired, old, boring, and overused words that we will replace with a better choice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. If words have appeared multiple times, put them on the "retired word" list. (Keep going if you have no repeat offenders!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Next, have the students brainstorm alternate ways to write the retired word in new exciting way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Then, have the students look up the retired words in the thesaurus or dictionary to come up with even more new choices!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Create an anchor chart as you go! </div>

I am joking.... But really, they should make a stamp of it so that grading takes less time.... hum....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM_QsvzEMlFnW9C_P4CFziHof_ZxAwwovKnaBp2p0Rc7qbxJa5EQ46UH8Gy6m8rfMdt0Mny052_7AdQrRr57pmLgT_V6ur7FAdWHyVKSLiiN9RoJ7PgGw6jblBnWzzAsG0Dfw8qLqM7XwP/s1600/IMG_7276.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM_QsvzEMlFnW9C_P4CFziHof_ZxAwwovKnaBp2p0Rc7qbxJa5EQ46UH8Gy6m8rfMdt0Mny052_7AdQrRr57pmLgT_V6ur7FAdWHyVKSLiiN9RoJ7PgGw6jblBnWzzAsG0Dfw8qLqM7XwP/s320/IMG_7276.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In all seriousness students need to restate the question to get the full credit on quizzes and tests so here is what they need to do.<br />
<br />
1. Restate the question<br />
2. Provide an answer<br />
3. Provide evidence.<br />
4. Put it all together in 1-2 sentences.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsbbCTYnVyoc_Ugd8bNCzj50G21ug9rZqmdVBrpyrFbGs8WiHhhgtQcRIxNuUQcN1SfCh7rvoUrDxm7UE2gdtuyL-bHJGktefCAQ1_0t9A4kEn_KrE6G_oCyekQVpUweJck1LSfy2y0mMC/s1600/IMG_7271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsbbCTYnVyoc_Ugd8bNCzj50G21ug9rZqmdVBrpyrFbGs8WiHhhgtQcRIxNuUQcN1SfCh7rvoUrDxm7UE2gdtuyL-bHJGktefCAQ1_0t9A4kEn_KrE6G_oCyekQVpUweJck1LSfy2y0mMC/s320/IMG_7271.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Use this formula over and over and over and encourage the kids to stick to it! It really becomes second nature to the students in a week or less.<br />
<br />
These steps however are really for simple, short answers. I know there are lots of strategies like "RACE" out there but I really found success in using something simple initially. When we got further into the year and were writing entire paragraphs as answers, the "RACE" strategy was so helpful because they explained their answer even further. <br />
<br />
Apply this strategy to other subjects too like science and social studies and see what stellar answers you start getting! I co-taught and I did ELA and social studies while my partner teacher did math and science and she LOVED the answers she would get for extended response math questions and science questions because they students were in the habit of explaining their answers.<br />
